SATELLITES AND BUSES
Island Explorer buses use global positioning satellites to determine their exact location. This information is transmitted to the dispatch center on the Bar Harbor Village Green and displayed on maps using GIS software.
      Maps are updated every 3 minutes plus any time a bus departs a scheduled stop. You can also select a bus stop to determine the estimated arrival time for the next bus due at that location.
      This information results from a technology demonstration project sponsored by the U.S. Departments of Transnportation and Interior. The vehicle tracking system was designed by Avail Technologies of State College, PA. Procurement, administrative oversight, and technical assistance for this project was provided by the Maine Department of Transportation.
